Where Will We Find Ollie Next?

All of our other dogs love laying on the carpet. Ollie likes to make herself comfy on my purse.

Our Poor Sisssy Dog's Surgery Ordeal

Before I go into Sissy's surgery ordeal I'd like to give you a brief background on my sweet old girl. When I first moved into my own place here in Alabama I knew that I wanted a dog. I had grown up with dogs all my life so it was natural to have a dog around all the time. Since this was my first dog I wanted to make sure that my schedule and everything would work out okay with a new pup. I decided to contact TEARS The Emergency Animal Rescue Service in Birmingham, Alabama to see about fostering one of their dogs.

When I went there I saw so many dogs that needed to be shown what its like to be loved on. I ended up bringing home Sissy who is a staffordshire terrier / bulldog mix. It looked as if she had just had puppies, but TEARS could not give me much information about her background. She had white on her face and all four paws so it was also hard to determine her age.

To make a long story short, after 3 months of trying to find her a home I decided I was going to keep her. She was just to sweet and well behaved not to adopt her. The funny part was that the day I decided to adopt her someone was really interested in adopting her. I had to tell them no, you're to late, shes mine now.

Sissy has now been in my life for about four years. My best guess at her age is between 7-9.
Last year, as I was petting Sissy I felt a lump in her stomach area. I took her to Dr. Weber and he said that the lump was a cancerous mass that had to be removed. So last year Sissy was cut open and all the lumps were removed. She recovered fully in about a month.

Last week I was petting Sissy and felt a familiar lump in her stomach. After taking her into Dr. Weber it was once again determined that Sissy was going to have to go under the knife. So Thursday morning my fiance took Sissy to Dr. Weber for her surgery. I picked her up around 5:30 that day and her insition looked awful. The base of the insition had an opening in it, but I figured it was there to help the draining process, since last time Sissy leaked a bit.

I took her home and she was just pitiful. She layed in the same spot for a while only getting up when she had to go outside. Saturday morning came and I looked at her insition and the whole looked a bit larger. I immideiatly took her back to Dr. Webers. He told me to leave her there until noon that day.

When I went back the insition was closed up tightly. He gave me some antibiotics in pill form and in cream form. I went to pick her up and put her in the car and blood squirted out of her wound. It was alarming and disgusting at the same time. I took her back in, but they said that it must have been a pocket of blood that had formed. Dr. Weber who is a man who is a bit long in the tooth came into the waiting room and got down on the floor to look at the inisition. He looked like a mechanic looking under a car. For being as old as he is, he is a pretty agile fellow.

Sissy looking pitiful after her surgery.

Sissy's insition that looks 100 times better in comparison to how it looked when I fisrt got her back. This is after it was closed back up tightly. I'm hopeing for a fast recovery. She will get her stitches out in two weeks.

Sissy resting while Sam watches her from his pillow. All the dogs gave her a good sniff when she got home. I believe they are as concerned about her as I am.

Ollie's First Day With Her New Foster Family

Before I go into telling you about Ollie's first day with us I should probably give you a little "Ollie aka Oatmeal Bio" first.

Ollie came to us by way of the Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue. A woman in Talladega was attempting to sell Ollie along with her sister and another Boston male for $75.00. She claimed that she could no longer take care of them. When she sent photos of the dogs it became evident that these dogs were being neglected with two of them having obvious cases of mange, later to be diagnosed as Demodectic Mange (a mange that is hereditary and not contagious to other dogs or people). The Boston Terrier Rescue got involved and were able to talk the woman into turning in all three dogs so that they could receive proper care and treatment. After all three Bostons were in the care of the rescue, the woman from Talladega was put on a national DO NOT ADOPT list. This does not mean that she will never be able to get her hands on another pet, but it does help lessen her chances.

These were the photos of all three of the Bostons that the woman sent. Left to Right, Henry, Oatmeal and Aloe. If anyone would like to adopt any one of them please contact the Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue. Also, Henry and Aloe are still being housed at the Altadena Valley Animal Clinic. If you or someone you know has the time and love to foster one of these pups please let the rescue know. You will be required to fill out an adoption application and a home visit will be conducted.

The story of these three really touched my heart and I knew I wanted to be a part of there recovery. My fiance Jim and I recently purchased a house giving us much more space than our previous apartment. After talking it over with him and taking our three pups, Goldie, Sissy and Sam into consideration he agreed to let Ollie aka Oatmeal come into our home as a foster pup. In this blog I will be documenting Ollie's transformation as she learns what its like to be loved and cared for as well as grows back all of her hair that is currently missing due to the mange.

Our pups giving Ollie a good sniff. I think they thought I brought home a little alien. All of them reacted very well to her.

After she checked out her new digs we spent some time bonding. She is such a sweet and loving dog. After being kept in a pen outside with two other Boston pups she just craves attention and loves to be in your lap. Being that she has no hair and I haven't had a little dog I can dress up I went to a local pet store and picked out a couple little outfits. You can barely see it in this picture, but she is fashioning a little pink and grey striped Polo top. Her other outfit will be debuted at a later date so stay tuned!

After bonding with me it didn't take her long to bond with another family member, Goldie our greyhound. She has done really well with going to the bathroom outside. I have this fabulous denim washable diaper on her as a precaution since she has been used to living outside. I don't think we'll be using this for very long since she hasn't had one accident all weekend.

These two are just to cute.

Ollie will be treated two more times for her mange which will hopefully get rid of it and allow her hair to grow back. We hope to see significant hair growth in the next couple months. Please stay tuned to "The Dogs of Our Lives" to follow Ollie's road back to recovery. If you know someone who has been wanting to adopt a dog please consider bringing this lovely girl into your home. To adopt her visit the Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue.
